Fantastic writing voice.  Seems like the main character is just the author (not that that's all bad).  The ending was disappointing - there were two new abilities dropped right into the middle of the climax.  Just insufficiently foreshadowed.

Apparently there's a sequel.  It isn't necessary - the book ends just fine.
