Book 1 (of 6) of The Codex Alera
So, smash together the Roman empire (but everyone's an elemental sorcerer) in conflict with the Celts and/or Germans (but they all take on characteristics of their animal totems) and throw in some serious intra-regime unrest and you have a very fun start to a story. Highly enjoyable. Fast-paced, and it seems that some of the pacing hides sections that don't stand up to too much poking and prodding, but a lot of fun regardless. I'm looking forward to the rest.
