I really enjoyed the series, based on strong characters and strong science. The descriptions tended toward purple at times, but there was a valid reason for that authorial choice, and even if it was a bit much for me, I understand why it was done. One of the better settings I've read, as well. The aliens were very alien, and cross-culture communications and errors were done well. Just solid overall.
