I almost really liked this book. Adventure and archaeology, guns and explosions. Lots of it was really fun. The narrator was all right, but he'd obviously learned to pronounce words from reading them - fore castle instead of foc'sle, gun whale instead of gunnel - that kind of thing.
The main thing that bugged me was that the science didn't seem plausible, and the more the author explained it, the worse it got. I read a lot of sci-fi - my suspenders of disbelief are pretty good - but the technobabble was really bad.
I had pretty much the same issue with the tenth book in the series, so I imagine that it's just that this author isn't a great fit for me.
