Book one of The Runelords
This was an older style of fantasy than I've read recently - more Raymond Feist than Jim Butcher - and it was pretty decent. . I wasn't overly enthralled by the characters - they were fine, but nothing special - and the main magic system is creepy and problematic in a way that is directly addressed by the book, and will cause some of the major conflicts in the series, which is nice. The secondary magic system is pretty soft and seems to work based on plot needs, so we'll see where it goes. I'm less hopeful about that magic.
I liked the book, but I'm not completely hooked.
