Interesting setting, with a really neat initial conceit. The characters were all right, as was the prose, but there wasn't much of a story. Instead, there was mostly lots of sightseeing. It was a slow read - I spent more time wondering what the story was eventually going to turn into than being excited about what was on the next page. There wasn't even really any character development - the only real thing that happened was exploring the setting.
Also, if the main character hadn't been the sidekick, it might have worked better. As it was, there was very little protagging going on.
