Mechanical Failure. Please restart your warship. - Joe Zieja

Saga, 2016, 343 pages
ISBN: 978-1-4814-5927-3
Read: April 2022, age 44

First book of the Epic Failure trilogy.

This book didn't really land with me - the humour was a bit too self-aware, and ever-present - chasing constant jokes instead of telling a funny story.  It was kind of a similar problem as I had with Valente's Space Opera.  There's no straight man anywhere, and it just gets to be a bit much.  I think for me, either the setting needs to be serious with an irreverent character, or the setting can be ridiculous with a character who plays it straight - but both together is too much for me.  I'm sure other people would like it.

By about halfway through the book, when the protagonist begins to "protag" instead of whining about being made to actually work, the book got a bit better.  It never did quite click with me, though.
