Joe Haldeman tends to high-concept sci-fi, and some are exceptional hits, and some are misses.  This one missed for me.  Interesting ideas, but with no real story arc to speak of, it felt like a set of loosely connected short stories.  The prose was nice, but overall, the book left me wanting a story.
