I liked the prose, but the actual story was just a whole bunch of people that I didn't care about doing their thing and succeeding or dying as things went along.  I had enough fun to not write off the author, but I was left wanting more. 

 

The book was published in 1998, and set in 2024 - the setting was pretty ambitious and not so accurate with the way things are going today.
