Change of Command - Elizabeth Moon
Baen, 1999, 436 pages
ISBN: 0-671-31963-9
Read: March 2016, age 37
This book gets away from the tight, character-driven stories of the early series, and tries to be more of a political thriller, and it fails at that. It wasn't obnoxious this time, but it also wasn't good. It was a slog - small clips of here and there building into a story that concerns the universe, but with no immediate personal concerns for the characters. And then we add in a super-hero Texas Ranger who makes everything better by showing up on-screen in heels with a gun. It's unfortunate - the early series was a lot of fun, but the last couple... not so good.
